Pick-up trucks, or utilities, not cars as their name suggests, are expected to handle a range of tasks not normally faced by other vehicles. A typical week in the life of a pick-up could involve everything from hauling supplies to transporting the mother in law, with off-road adventures on the weekend.

The pick-up market is all about offering buyers plenty of choice, and the Rodeo comes in a staggering 56 model variationsBasically, there’s three body styles – single, space and crew cabs; three trim levels – DX, LX and LT, and two or four-wheel drive versions.

A long wheelbase cab-chassis version, for extra carrying capacity, is also available. The standard tray size is increased to a class-leading 2311mm long and 1553mm wide.

The 2.4-litre Rodeo was smooth and at ease on the motorway, providing great performance as long as the revs were kept up; I still think it would struggle under a decent payload. .

Car-like features like the power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering give the Rodeo impressive on-road dynamics, at least for a work vehicle. The stiffer chassis, combined with engineered front-coil independent suspension, makes for comfortable and refined town cruising.

The Rodeo also retained its composure on bumpy dirt roads, taking potholes in its stride with little disturbance in the cabin.

.Both the steering wheel and seats are adjustable, but the left footrest is too narrow for your average Blundstone. Storage spaces are many, but not always sensibly located, with the drink holder in the door positioned near the window winder.

Powerful air-conditioning, though, was a welcome relief .

The stiffer chassis, and much improved crumple zones, adds to the Rodeo’s crashworthiness. Other safety things include bigger brakes, while LT versions get ABS and twin airbags.

The Rodeo’s towing capacity has been impoved to 750kg unbraked and 2000kg brake-assisted.

There’s plenty of space in the boot, but the rear seats don’t split fold for longer loads. Mitsubishi has chosen to add extra metal sheeting behind the rear seats to stop luggage intruding during rear-end collisions which only allows a little ski-hole in the centre.

The engine is an absolute wonder Unlike conventional cylinder-based engines, the rotary spins and spins, never slowing, never getting harsh or rough. The 9000rpm redline comes up far too quickly, though Mazda provides five more gears to do it all over again.

. In first gear the RX-8 pulls strongly away from standstill, increasing the rate of acceleration cleanly and aggressively, really hitting its stride above 4000rpm. And where most cars are within 1500rpm of peak power, the RX-8 is not even half way through its rev range. Mazda claims a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds and a 0-400m time in the low 14s for the RX-8, and we see no reason to doubt it.

Mazda’s engineers worked to keep the weight low in the RX-8’s body, They also managed to locate a perfect 50 / 50 weight split front to rear, which pays off tenfold on the road. Every nuance of what the chassis and suspension is doing is fed delicately back to the driver, inviting you to not only explore the car’s limits, but get intimate with them, again and again. Overstep the limits and the RX-8 gives you time to correct your error. Fail to catch the warning signs and the DSC (dynamic stability control) electronic watchdog will regulate the brakes on each wheel to bring everything back onto an even keel.

Over-estimate your ability at other times and the RX-8 pushes safely into understeer, a simple liftoff bringing the show back on track. It’s this rewarding and reassuring dynamic package that makes you feel a better driver than you are. And we’re all for that.

We had little chance to really give the 323mm disc, single piston brakes a workout. They’re equipped with four-channel ABS and electronic brake distribution, which, coupled with the tyres’ prodigious grip, shouldn’t raise any performance anxiety concerns.
